Tribal Opioid Response: Protecting Our People, Restoring Balance
Across Indian Country, we are seeing the painful impact of opioids—powerful drugs that were meant to ease pain but have instead brought heartbreak to too many of our families. From prescription pills to fentanyl to heroin, opioids are claiming lives and disrupting the balance of our communities.
At Doya Natsu Healing Center, we’re responding with strength, culture, and care. Our mission is to increase access to culturally grounded and medically supported treatment that meets people where they are—offering prevention, recovery support, and real tools for healing.
What Are Opioids?
Opioids are strong drugs that can relieve pain but also create powerful feelings of euphoria (a “high”)—which is what makes them so addictive. They include prescription medications like oxycodone, hydrocodone, and morphine, as well as illegal drugs like heroin and synthetic opioids such as fentanyl. Misuse of these substances—taking them in ways not prescribed—can quickly lead to addiction, overdose, and even death.
The Hard Truth
According to the CDC, American Indian and Alaska Native people have the second highest opioid overdose death rates in the country—with 15.7 deaths for every 100,000 individuals. That’s not just a statistic—that’s our cousins, our uncles, our nieces, and our neighbors.
Our Response
Doya Natsu provides:
Culturally respectful treatment that includes traditional teachings and modern medicine
Access to FDA-approved medications (like methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone) that help reduce cravings and support recovery
Prevention programs to educate youth and families
Support groups and therapy, both online and in person
Referrals to higher levels of care when needed
Our approach blends the old ways and the new—because our people deserve healing that honors who we are. Every step toward recovery is a step toward restoring the health of our communities and the spirit of our ancestors.
We’re here. We’re ready. Let’s walk this road together.
